Align your #shoulderstand or #sarvangasana This adjustment was given to me in an Iyengar class and it gave me HUGE insight into aligning this pose. So, when this pose came up in my @cyogalab #fortheloveofyoga challenge, I knew I had to share this tip with you all. The differences are subtle in the video, because I have worked long and hard trying to get vertical in this pose. But if you compare where my legs are with my arms flat to the floor the first round and then at the end of the video, you can see the difference pretty clearly. First, come up into shoulderstand in the normal way (roll legs up/over, work shoulders under/in, lift the legs). It looks like I am pretty vertical as long as my hands are supporting my spine. As soon as I bring my arms flat to the floor, my hips bend a bit, my butt goes back and my feet come further over my face. This is because I’m not truly fully balanced on the shoulders. My hips aren’t actually high enough and the weight is falling back. As long as my hands are there supporting the spine, I look vertical, but as soon as I remove that support the legs feel heavy and the core muscles have a harder time keeping them straight up. SO – TRY THIS! Sit facing the wall with your legs outstretched. Mark the spot where your sit bones hit the floor – this is where your shoulders will go. Line your props up (if you’re using them), and turn around and place your shoulders at your mark. Come up into shoulderstand and bring one foot (flexed) to the wall. It’ll feel like it’s too far behind you, but lift your hips further and press your heel into the wall. NOW your hips are fully over your shoulders. You may have brought your hips out of parallel in an effort to reach the wall, so now energetically draw the hip of the leg touching the wall back away from the wall without moving the foot from the wall – this will draw your opposite hip into alignment and now both hips are squared to your shoulders and aligned directly over them. To bring both legs to vertical, LOOK UP at the lifted foot and keep it perfectly still as you draw the wall-leg up to meet it, without moving the hips. TA-DA! THIS is a fully aligned shoulderstand.💃
